Please read if you plan to attend!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: It is likely to be VERY cold at the top of the climb (it SNOWS up there!) and for the descent that follows. Pack WARM layers, puffer jackets and thick gloves encouraged. While some of the Curve squad will be riding, there is no formal organisation - it will just be like you're out riding with your mates; you need to be self sufficient. Please upload the ride file to your Garmin or GPS device. If you don't have a device, ride with someone who does.Driving from Melbourne CBD allow 1.5 hours to arrive at Yarra Junction. For those wanting a longer day, consider catching the train from Flinders Street to Lilydale then riding to Yarra Junction. If you are riding out and back your day total will be 130 km. You’ll need to check the train times to ensure success! You don't need to ride a Curve to join Curve rides!

ROUTE DESCRIPTION: This time Curve is heading out of town to one of our favourite climbs - the back of Mount Donna Buang. A popular location for many road cyclists, we will be taking the less traveled gravel road up instead.Starting in Yarra Junction, riders head out on the Warburton Rail trail to warm up. Once in Millgrove, the real climbing starts. Following Dee Road along the river, it’s a steep pinch to the O'Shannassy Aqueduct Trail. This section is flat but can be heavily littered with bark and branches, so be mindful of your riding and your derailleur through here. There is a sharp descent at the end of this section onto Don Road. It is sealed for the most part as the gradient increases up to Don Gap. From Don Gap, the road becomes gravel (good condition) for ten kilometres as you continue climbing higher. Many thick, lush forests, tall trees, giant ferns, and scenic views. The gravel road eventually meets the main sealed tourist road, then it’s 1.5 kms to the very top of Mt Donna Buang and probably the steepest part of the whole climb with gradients over 10%. At the summit, you’ll find toilets and a lookout tower. This is not a beginner's ride, and you must be comfortable and capable of climbing for 2-3 hours and on gravel roads. There is no resupply point on this stretch, so pack enough food and water.

After the summit, riders will start the 17 km descent into Warburton, BE CAREFUL! This is a tourist road, shared with cars and motorbikes. Be aware of your surroundings, and descend within your capabilities.Once in Warburton, there are numerous options for food or drink. To finish, riders will jump straight back onto the rail trail to deliver them to Yarra Junction.

Race to the Rock 2026 - Amuse-Bouche

EVENT INFO

Race to the Rock in 2026 is a solo, unsupported bike ride from Naarm (Melbourne) to Yulara. This the amuse-bouche option which stops a few thousand kilometres early in Ballarat. Enjoy the course as a day-ride and get the train back from Ballarat the same evening or the day after!

This is draft v1 of the 2026 amuse-bouche course. I don't expect it will change much before blast off.

Why not roll out with the full Race to the Rock party and make a day of it?! Kick-off is on Sat 5 Sep 2026 at 6:22am.

Enjoy some five-star cycling infrastructure on the way out to Werribee before a quick sniff of some You Yangs singletrack and a brief tour of the Brisbane Ranges. After that you'll roll along some champagne gravel and climb the mighty Mt Buninyong, home of so many road race battles, before riding the first 20 ish km of the Goldfields trail. The route takes you right to front door of the Ballarat train station.

When: Sat 5 Sep at 6:22am
Where: Melbourne GPO
Route: HERE

PLEASE read if you plan to attend!

This is just the Amuse-Bouche, but still a solid day ride. If you're planning to take on the FULL COURSE remember:

Beware! This course contain some sections that will be extremely difficult to ride on a fully loaded bike. The steep, rugged and rocky terrain mean that there are unmarked trail features including drops, extremely steep descents and sudden rock roll-overs. Everything is safe to walk your bike through with care. If you're not confident riding a section, do as we do and WALK IT! Always be ready for a sudden and sketchy trail feature.

Beware! Beware! The full course contains very remote sections that are extremely dangerous for unprepared or inexperienced bike tourers. There are extremely long gaps between services on unsealed roads and tracks that could turn into an unrideable mess with only a small amount of rain. You could have long stretches of sand or heavy corrugations on the remote desert roads and tracks. Do not be fooled by a lack of climbing - poor surfaces can make for very slow progress so plan accordingly. You will need to do your own research to find where food, water and other supplies or services you need will be located. Be warned that many roads on this course could close due to fire or flood on any day of the year, sometimes for weeks.

Maybe lots of riders will show up for Race to the Rock? Maybe you'll be the only person there? That shouldn't matter to you. If you choose to show up, it will be your own personal race against the clock. If you choose to ride the course, that's your business and not my problem. It will be your own personal decision. You are the organiser of your ride. Not me. Do your own due diligence on the course. It is dangerous, remote and requires serious preparation and experience to complete unsupported.

What is The Border Run?

Same Plan. New Border.

How fast can you get from your bed to the border by bike? In 2024, around the March equinox we hosted the inaugural Border Run, a fast and flat blast to the border. For the September Equinox we’re going bigger, we are going XL!! Curve will run the Border Run XL as a spirited social ride starting on Fri 25 Sep 2025. Roll out will be at 4:30am from the old Melbourne GPO.

If that time and date don’t work for you, do it whenever you can make it happen. Go on! Get off the couch and have a crack! This one is a tougher ride than the Border Run; it’s longer and has more climbing.Like many historic overlander missions, this ride will depart from Melbourne’s original GPO. Expect some bike paths on the way out of town, then a mix of sealed and unsealed roads heading north. Please take it easy on the bike paths on the way out of town.

Ride it all in one hit if you dare! Ride it over two, three, four or twenty days. See how fast you can ride it, flashpack it, bikepack it, leave your bike at home and run it. Make your own rules. Slap the border sign to finish your ride across the state! The ride finishes at the Vic-NSW border on Gateway Island at the Welcome to NSW sign. Your ride is complete once you tap the “Welcome to New South Wales” sign and take a finisher photo.

For a full breakdown check out this BLOG

There are plenty of options for indoor accommodation or camping on the way to Albury. The route deliberately has good resupply options too. The route passes through Kinglake (70 km), Alexandra (158 km), Bonnie Doon (194 km), Swanpool (243 km), Benalla (270 km) and Wangaratta (318 km).

If you're an uncontrollable hellcat, ride it all in one hit! Some may want two and three day options. Here are some itineraries ranging from BOLD to more civilised that can be flashpacked (indoor accommodation to cut down on what you need to take).

For a 2-day mission, with a BIG first day, try this:
Day 1: Melbourne to Benalla (270 km). This gets most of the climbing out of the way.
Day 2: Benalla to Albury (127 km). Recovery ride!

For a 2-day mission, with a more even split, try this:
Day 1: Melbourne to Bonnie Doon (194 km)
Day 2: Boonie Doon to Albury (203 km). Longer but easier than day 1 with less climbing.

For a 3-day graventure stay in Alexandra and Benalla:
Day 1: Melbourne to Alexandra (158 km)
Day 2: Alexandra to Benalla (112 km)
Day 3: Benalla to Albury (127 km)

CURVE FLINTA* 850

Event Details

The Curve FLINTA* 850 is a self supported gravel bikepacking adventure. The route was drawn up by Curve’s own April Drage to showcase the value and need for a challenging, bikepacking event for FLINTA* riders. The route begins in central Melbourne and traverses the Victorian High Country; think wild and deeply rewarding rather than beginner friendly. Inspired by Lael’s Rallies, this event is not a race, just an opportunity to head out at the same time as like minded people, with a focus on connection and personal challenge, not competition.

FAQs

Who is this for?
FLINTA* is a German abbreviation that stands for "Frauen, Lesben, Intergeschlechtliche, nichtbinäre, trans und agender Personen", meaning women, lesbians, intersex, non-binary, trans and agender people.

This route is not beginner-friendly. It can be slow going at times, you may encounter wild weather (extreme heat or even snow!) and you may need to lift your bike over fallen trees or other obstacles.

Fear not, if you’re keen but not experienced that’s just fine; with many months ahead to get ready, you won’t be a beginner by the time November rolls around. Reach out to april@curvecycling.com if you need some advice about how to prepare. You don’t need to be fast to have a good time out there (it’s not a race), but you will need to be self-sufficient. There is no support of any kind offered as part of this event.

A Whatsapp community will be created for registered riders, to facilitate collaborative preparation if you’d like to get involved.

What bike do I need?
A gravel bike or hard tail mountain bike with a minimum tyre size of 2 inches will be best for this ride. The terrain includes small sections of rugged 4WD track, rough fire roads and steep, rocky climbs and descents.

How do I get back to Melbourne from Wangaratta?
VLine offers a regular train service from Wangaratta to Melbourne. Bikes can be taken on Vline (not XPT) trains, but capacity can be limited. Do your research, but rest assured it should be straight forward and cost you about $11.

Is there a cut off time?
There is no time limit. However, a group finisher dinner will occur in Melbourne on Monday night the 30th of November. You have a little more than 9 days to ride the route and find your way back; plenty of time!

Is there a registration fee? No. Participation is free. You will be responsible for all personal expenses associated with participation. What else do I need to know? There are long stretches without phone service. We strongly recommend that you carry an emergency beacon (a Garmin inreach or similar) with you on this route. A SPOT tracker can be rented from MAProgress. A MAProgress tracking page will be set up for the event. You will need to carry everything you need to be self-sufficient- tool kit, clothing layers, shelter and food. If you need advice about your kit, just ask.

PLEASE read if you plan to attend
